So I just saw this Ted Talk on the internet and thought I would share/talk about it because it is a topic I am very passionate about.
As Daniel Reisel shows in the video above, it is be possible for people such as psychopaths to be rehabilitated and to be taught to feel emotions such as empathy.
Which brings me onto the topic I feel very strongly about, capital punishment.
Living in England, we no longer have things such as the death penalty, but over in countries like China and america it is a very different story. During 2013 at least 802 people were killed as a result of the death penalty, excluding China where over a thousand were put to death in 2013.
In the USA, 1,348 people have been executed since the death penalty was brought back to the country. With 35 states allowing people to be sentenced to death, it is only the minority of states which have decided to ban this practice.
There is also a lot of racial injustice, because while 56% of people executed are white, there are actually more black people killed in proportion to their part of the population.
The main methods still used around the world are Lethal injections, Electrocution, Gas chamber, Hanging and Firing Squad. Though in some countries, Beheading and Stoning is also not uncommon.
I personally will never understand what pushes people towards capital punishment. It is a barbaric matter reminiscent of the days of slavery and other horrific practices.I see no way to approve of murdering others. As other articles will show, it is possible to rehabilitate people and killing is never a necessary resort. People are placed on death row for murdering others. Does it not seem ridiculous that you are condemning them to the same fate that you disapprove of? If you murder somebody for murdering another person, then surely everyone who decides to end another persons life should also be killed, and it will become a long chain of needless deaths.
I'm sorry for that rant, but I felt it needed to be said. Feel free to leave any responses below.
